US 10.5 in 16” circular needles

Gauge: 16sts by 20 rows over 4
inches
Sizes: Tots (15”), Small Adult (18”), Large Adult (21”)
Really fits sizes
Tots: 15 to 18 inches
Small Adult: 18 to 21 inches
Large Adult: 21 to 24 inches
This is the lovely Firefly Hat! Yes, I believe that Jayne’s mother
made hats for everyone in the Cobb Clan. She would be picking favorites
other wise. Also, the color of the earflaps is totally pumpkin or a burnt
orange! NOT RED! If you’re going to make an ugly, awesome hat do it
right. It’s a pet peeve of mine. A hint: With one ball of each color you can
make both the Tots and Small Adult, two out of one grouping. I hope you
have fun making this cunning hat for you and your friends.
CO 60 (72, 84) with orange
PM, join in round
Work in 1×1 ribbing for 3 rows
Switch to st st for 9 (12, 15) rows
Total: 12 (15, 18) orange rows and 2 ½ (3, 3 ½) inches
Change to yellow
Continue in st st for 18 (21, 24) rows and 3 ½ (4, 4 ½) inches
Total hat: 6 (7, 8) inches
Decrease rows of Crown
Row1: K2tog, repeat decrease to the end of the row 30 (36, 42) stitches
Row2: K2tog, repeat decrease to the end of the row 15 (18, 21) stitches
Row3: K2tog, repeat decrease and knit last stitch on Tots and Large Adult hat to end with
7 (9, 11) stitches.
Cut yarn and weave through open stitches
Earflaps
At Hem: PM, count 16 (20, 24), PM, Count 14 (16, 18), PM, Count 16 (20, 24), PM
Between first and second marker, pick up 16 (20, 24) stitches
Beginning with a Purl row work in st st for 3 (3 ½, 4) inches ending with a knit row
Decrease rows:
Row1: P2tog, P to last 2sts, P2tog
Row2: K2tog, K to last 2sts, K2tog
Repeat two rows 4 more times
BO 2 (4, 8) stitches
Cut yarn and leave tail hanging
Repeat between third and forth marker
Make two pieces of fringe, place on the bottom of earflaps
Make a one 2 (3, 4) inch pompom with burnt red as main color with bits of orange and
yellow, sew to top
